Have you tightened your financial belt in the last few years? All the while noticing that the price of everything is going up? For the Sullivan County Historical Society, this is becoming a crucial time financially. In recent years we have had to put a new roof on the main building, which has actually reduced our heat bill, keeps it cool in the summer and has contributed to humidity control for protection of artifacts housed in the museum. The Baldwin House needed painting outside and there’s the upkeep for the yard and gardens throughout the summer months.
Acquisitions coming in still need the attention and care that we strive to give all contents for their preservation and viewing to the public. The phone bill and the internet connections: nope, haven’t seen their costs go down either. For a number of years we’ve had the hot water heaters turned off and keep the heat temperature at 65 degrees. Visitors very often come thru the door with a bag or box of sleeve protectors. This writer can’t remember when last any volunteer submitted a mileage bill. And, oh, by the way, this is an all volunteer organization.
In 2010 the governor eliminated all grant monies for museums to utilize for general operating functions. The Society annually receives $8,000 from the Sullivan County Commissioners which was a match to this grant. The Commissioners have graciously continued with their gift. This amount, albeit appreciated, cannot ensure the continued functioning of the Society’s efforts to maintain the museum for future generations.
We therefore implore those of you who care about the history of Sullivan County being preserved by the Society to consider any of the options of membership and/or donation for the continued upkeep of YOUR museum.
